Digital Self Defense: How Political Activists Defend Their Privacy

From “Twitter Revolutions” to “Black Lives Matter”: Digital communication has changed political activism. It helps political activists to stand up against oppressive governments and exploitative companies, but when speaking up, these users face increasing challenges in protecting their online privacy against a system of digital mass surveillance. In our research project we show how online privacy protection is a time consuming, complicated task that leads to a lifestyle of secrecy that contradicts the ideals of political activists, hinders their work and stifles social change.
